Grief

Losing a loved one, a friend, or a long-time family pet, can be one of life’s most shattering experiences.  Along with the sadness, can come feelings of guilt, anger, regrets, and a sense that it might not ever be possible to feel better.  We question the meaning of life/death and struggle to make it through each day while the world around us seems to keeps moving on in an ordinary and unforgiving kind of way.  Everything around us seems to remind us of the loss and the void in our lives that the loss has created.  It can sometimes feel like nobody truly understands or cares.

Although healing as it relates to grief is an ongoing and lifelong process, there are ways grief can be faced that allow us to express our pain in a healthy way.  Grief is the ultimate expression of the love we had for those we have lost. When we are dealing with loss, the best thing we can do is to allow ourselves to feel; to understand that it’s okay not to be okay; to process the pain; to share your story, the memories you had, and the impact that those lost had on your life.

There’s no right or wrong way to grieve and people express their grief in different kinds of ways.  The most important thing you can do for yourself when dealing with a loss is to seek support in a safe place where you can be heard and understood.  Therapy can provide that space for you.
